Cow & Gate film guides to toddler development

The toddler years are a crucial time for a number of reasons. Between the ages of 1 and 3, a toddler gains around 40% in weight and height and a significant amount of brain and organ development occurs.

As a result, the nutrient requirements of toddlers are very different from older children and adults. Relative to their size, they can need more than double of some nutrients and providing what they need can present parents with definite challenges.

To help you support mums and bring to life the needs of toddlers, Cow & Gate have produced a series of films that explore this critical stage of development. The films feature ‘must-know’ information about toddler nutrition and development: what mums can see and what they can’t.

We’ve had some very positive feedback about the films and as a result, we’re making them available to you, to watch on line and to order as DVD copies to use with mums of toddlers on your caseload.

13 - 18 months covers the following:

  • A toddler’s growth has slowed down compared to when they were a baby. However, it is still very rapid.
  • They may start to become a little picky about their food now, as they gradually form their own likes and dislikes.
  • They’ve got more teeth, so they can chew their food better.
  • The soft spots in a toddler’s skull will now close.
  • Toddlers feel emotions like anger and excitement before they know how to control them and this can cause tantrums
  • Now is the time to start teaching healthy habits like washing their hands before they eat.

18+ months

  • A toddler’s body will start to change and they’ll lose their ‘baby’ shape.
  • Mealtimes may be challenging as fussy eating can rear its head now.
  • A toddler has a small stomach, which means they need to eat little and often – healthy snacking is good!
  • Toddlers need a diet where fat supplies around 50% of their total calories
  • A toddler’s immune system is maturing and their physical barriers are of a similar strength to an adult’s.
