There is lots of confusing information about what you can and can`t take in your hand luggage and through customs when you go abroad, especially when it comes to infant formula, children`s drinks and creams.
Here are a few basic pointers to advise mums on if they ask:
-
Pushchairs can be taken on planes but have to go through x-ray screening
-
Baby creams , lotions and oils, eg: nappy cream, can be taken. Usually a maximum of 10 x 100ml of liquids (or 1 litre total volume) can be taken through in a transparent resealable bag measuring a maximum of 20 x 20 cm.
-
Baby food, baby milk and sterilised water can be taken in your hand luggage. This includes: soya milk for babies, sterilised water (in a baby bottle) formula, breast milk or cows milk specifically for babies and baby food of various consistencies. You are allowed to take enough for the journey. In some cases this may be over 100ml. The adult carrying the baby food or milk may be asked to verify it by tasting.
-
Nappies have to be packed in hand luggage
-
Any formula purchased once through customs can be taken on the plane, so it might be advisable for parents to phone airlines ahead of thier journey to check if their formula is stocked in the chemist at the airport
